Help with YoYo

Most questions are answered below. For anything else, email contact@stacksy.com.au and a person will reply, usually within a working day.

Running a test

Set up

On the home screen choose the starting level (level 5 for the full protocol), the lead-in (10, 20 or 60 seconds), and whether you want voice calls and 3-2-1 ticks. Add athletes by name if you want a tile for each one. Tap Arm test.

Start

Stand the athletes on the start line and tap anywhere on the field. The lead-in counts down, the voice announces the first shuttle, and the first beep starts the run. Green bar means run out, red bar means run back. The number between shuttles is the recovery countdown.

Warnings and drop-outs

Tap an athlete's tile once when they fail to reach the line in time. The tile turns amber. Tap it again when they drop out; their last completed shuttle and distance are recorded and the tile dims. Undo reverses the last tap. The test ends by itself when every athlete is out, or tap Stop test at any time.

Timer only

Leave the athlete list empty to run the timer on its own. The Warning button counts misses for a single runner; the second miss ends the test.

Sound

Beeps keep playing with the screen locked. Turn the ringer volume up, or better, connect a Bluetooth or wired speaker for a group on a field. Voice announcements use the phone's speech voice; an Australian English voice is used when available.

If you hear no beeps, check that the phone is not in Silent mode with the volume down, and that no other app has taken over audio. YoYo ducks music playing underneath it rather than stopping it.

Apple Watch

Install the watch app from the Watch app on your iPhone, or it installs automatically with the phone app if automatic installs are on. Open YoYo on the watch, then start a test on the phone; the watch joins within a second or two and taps at every start, turn and finish beep.

The first time, the watch asks for Health permission to read heart rate and save workouts. You can decline; the test still runs without heart rate.

End on the watch asks whether to stop the test for everyone (which also ends it on the phone) or just leave on this watch. Start locally runs the timer on the watch alone, haptics only, with no phone.

Results

The result screen shows final shuttle, distance, estimated VO₂max and duration for the group and each athlete. Copy results for spreadsheet puts a tab-separated table on the clipboard; Share sends it via Mail, Messages or any app. History on the home screen keeps past tests on the device; swipe to delete.

VO₂max is estimated from distance with the formula published by Bangsbo, Iaia and Krustrup (2008): distance in metres × 0.0084 + 36.4. It is an estimate, not a lab measurement.

Requirements

  • iPhone or iPad running iOS 17 or later.
  • Apple Watch running watchOS 10 or later, paired to the iPhone, for the watch features.
