The Yo-Yo test, timed properly.
Every beep on the audio clock. A tile for every athlete. Haptics on the wrist. Results you can paste straight into a spreadsheet.
Free. No account. Nothing leaves your device. Works offline once loaded.
Built so a 30-minute test never drifts.
Most beep-test apps chain timers. Each one slips a little, and by level 18 your shuttles are running late. YoYo does not.
One clock
Every shuttle, turn and finish is a fixed offset from a single start time. Nothing is scheduled relative to the previous beep.
Beeps on the audio hardware
Tones are scheduled on the device's audio clock 600 ms ahead, sample-accurate. The screen animates from the same clock.
The official table
Speed = level × 0.5 + 7.5 km/h, 2 × 20 m per shuttle, 10 s active recovery. Starting at a higher level is for training at the faster speeds only; the test always starts at level 5.
Run the whole team from one phone.
Add your athletes before the test. Each one gets a tile.
- Tap once for a warning when they miss the line.
- Tap again when they drop out. Their last completed shuttle and distance are recorded.
- Undo is always one tap away. The test ends when everyone is out.
Voice calls every shuttle the way a tester would: "Level 12 · 3 shuttles · 12 point 1", with 3-2-1 ticks before each start. Both switch off if you prefer the beeps alone.
Cues on the wrist. Heart rate in the result.
Open YoYo on the watch and it mirrors the phone's clock exactly. A tap at every start, turn and finish beep, so a runner feels the cue on a windy oval when the speaker is 40 metres away.
Haptics, not Bluetooth relays
The watch runs the same schedule from the same start time, so cues are computed on the wrist and never wait on a radio.
A Health workout
Each test is saved as a running workout. Heart rate streams to the phone during the run.
Recovery heart rate
Captured one minute after the last shuttle and stored with the result.
Level, distance, VO₂max. Per athlete.
When the test ends you get the final shuttle, metres covered, an estimated VO₂max (Bangsbo, Iaia & Krustrup, 2008) and duration for the group and for every athlete.
Copy the table for a spreadsheet or share it straight from the phone. History stays on the device. Works on iPad too, with a side panel in landscape for the bench.
Questions coaches ask
Is this the Level 1 or Level 2 test?
Level 1. YoYo runs the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test Level 1: 91 shuttles from 10 km/h to 19 km/h. Level 2 is on the list if there's demand.
How do I actually run the test?
There is a guide built into the app, and the same one is on this site at yoyo.hockey/guide: marking out the course, what each beep means, warnings and drop-outs, and what the results mean.
Do I need to install anything?
No. yoyo.hockey/app runs the full test in any modern browser, on a laptop, tablet or phone, and keeps working offline once it has loaded. Add it to your home screen and it behaves like an app. The native iPhone and Android apps add background audio with the screen locked and, on iPhone, the Apple Watch.
Do I need the Apple Watch?
No. The phone runs the full test on its own. The watch adds haptics and heart rate for one wearer, usually the tester or a single athlete.
Does it keep going with the screen locked?
Yes. Beeps and voice keep playing with the screen off. Plug into a speaker for a group.
Can I start from a higher level?
Yes, for training only. Starting higher lets athletes practise running at the faster speeds so their bodies get used to them before a test. It is not the test: the Yo-Yo test always starts at level 5.1, and the app records the starting level with every result and labels anything else a training run.
Can our association manage results centrally?
Not in the free app, by design: nothing leaves the tester's phone. For associations, panels and federations that want results and evidence submitted to them, stored for their use and test cycles scheduled, we offer an organisation tier priced on enquiry. See For organisations.
Where does my data go?
Nowhere. Roster, results and heart rate stay on your phone and in Apple Health. There is no account and no server. See the privacy policy.
Free for testers. A managed tier for the bodies that rely on the result.
The app is free and stays free: roster, results and evidence photos live on the tester's phone and go nowhere unless they share them. Associations, umpire panels and federations that need more than a shared PDF can have YoYo work for the organisation as well as the tester.
Managed submissions
Testers submit a result, with its evidence photos and report, straight to your organisation. You see who has tested, when, at what level, and the photos behind any result that is queried.
Athlete performance over time
Results stored for your use: level, distance and estimated VO₂max for every athlete across seasons, with training runs kept apart from tests, and exports for your own systems.
Test cycles and scheduling
Set the testing windows your panels work to, see who is due and who has lapsed, and remind testers before a window closes.
Built to what your organisation needs and priced on enquiry, by size and scope. Accounts belong to the organisation, and the free app for testers does not change.
